How to have a Greener Work Space in 2019 – Part 2

Biophilic Design

It is not until very recently that I have learnt of Biophilic Design.

What is it, I hear you ask!!!

Well the term Biophilia means our tendency to instinctively seek a connection with nature. Biophilic Design reconnects us to nature by bringing a more natural environment to us.

Today our lives are mostly spent indoors (sadly, around 90%) and are too fast paced to appreciate the nature around us and unwittingly we have lost our connection to nature.

When was the last time you put your phone down and listened to the birds singing?

By incorporating the natural world into our buildings using vegetation, natural light, natural materials and natural views, it can bring our focus back to nature.

These biophilic elements help us to reduce stress levels and feel more energised during the working day and can enhance our creativity and collaborative working.

So why not try some of these biophilic tips to bring nature to you and your colleagues:

  • Bring more natural light in by opening up floor space which will create the feeling of a light and airy space. You could also use bench desking for a more open feel.

  • Incorporate natural textures into your working space, such as wood and stone. Use colours and patterns to mimic nature.

  • When choosing flooring use something with repetitive patterns.

  • Install a living wall, they are a great focal point, and look amazing.
